How to Buy Aroma Chemicals Wholesale in India – Complete Buyer's Guide

Who Needs to Buy Aroma Chemicals in India?
Aroma chemicals are the building blocks of every fragrance product manufactured in India. The buyers fall broadly into three categories:
- Agarbatti manufacturers: Need fragrance compounds and individual aroma chemicals for incense stick dipping formulas
- Perfumers and fragrance formulators: Need individual aroma chemicals to create custom fragrance blends for personal care, cosmetics, and fine fragrance
- Industrial users: Soap and detergent manufacturers, air freshener producers, candle makers, and home care product companies needing fragrance raw materials
LargAroma serves all three segments from our Bhubaneswar facility, supplying both individual aroma chemicals and ready-to-use fragrance compounds across India.
Understanding Aroma Chemical Grades
When buying aroma chemicals in India, one of the first things to understand is that the same chemical name can refer to products of very different quality levels:
Brand-grade chemicals (BASF, IFF, Symrise, Givaudan)
These are chemicals manufactured by the world's leading aroma chemical companies. They carry consistent purity (typically 98–99%+), batch-to-batch consistency, and come with full technical documentation including GC-MS profiles and safety data sheets. Examples: BASF Linalool, IFF Galaxolide Pure, BASF Linalyl Acetate.
Brand-grade chemicals cost more but deliver predictable, consistent results — essential for any serious fragrance formulation work.
Generic grade chemicals
Manufactured by smaller chemical plants, typically in India or China. Purity levels vary (often 95–98%) and batch consistency can be less reliable. Suitable for industrial applications where exact consistency is less critical.
At LargAroma, we stock both — BASF and IFF grade where the application demands it, and quality generic grade where appropriate — and we always specify which grade you are getting.
What to Check Before Buying
1. CAS Number
Every genuine aroma chemical has a unique CAS (Chemical Abstracts Service) number. Always verify the CAS number matches the chemical you want. A supplier who cannot provide the CAS number is a red flag.
2. Purity specification
Ask for the purity percentage and how it is measured (GC purity). For top-quality perfumery work, look for 98%+ GC purity. For industrial/agarbatti use, 95%+ is generally acceptable.
3. Odour evaluation
Before committing to a large order, always request a sample to smell. Trust your nose — if the chemical does not smell right, do not buy it regardless of the specification sheet. Impurities often manifest as off-notes that the purity number does not capture.
4. Packaging and storage
Aroma chemicals should be supplied in sealed, food-grade or chemical-grade containers — amber glass, aluminium drums, or HDPE containers depending on quantity. Avoid chemicals supplied in recycled containers or without proper labelling.
5. Shelf life and storage instructions
Reputable suppliers provide shelf life information. Most aroma chemicals have a 1–3 year shelf life when stored correctly (cool, dark, sealed). Ask for the manufacture or expiry date.
Minimum Order Quantities
For small-scale buyers and fragrance students, the biggest barrier to entry has traditionally been high minimum order quantities from large distributors. At LargAroma, we supply from 50g trial sizes up to 50kg bulk orders — specifically to make quality aroma chemicals accessible to small manufacturers and independent formulators.
Our standard pack sizes are 50g, 100g, 200g, 250g, 500g, and 1kg. For quantities above 5kg, contact us for bulk pricing.
How to Assess a New Supplier
Whether you are considering LargAroma or any other supplier, these are the questions to ask:
- Can you provide the CAS number and purity specification for this chemical?
- Is this BASF/IFF/Symrise grade or generic grade?
- Can I get a 50–100g sample before committing to a larger order?
- What is your turnaround time and how do you ship?
- Do you have a GST invoice?
- What is your return policy if the chemical does not meet specification?
A reliable supplier will answer all of these questions confidently and transparently.
Online vs Local Purchase
Buying aroma chemicals online in India is increasingly practical and often more economical than local purchase:
- Online advantages: Wider selection, competitive pricing, direct comparison, detailed product information, pan-India delivery
- Local advantages: Can smell before buying, immediate availability, no shipping cost for very large orders
For most fragrance work, online purchasing from a trusted supplier is more convenient and offers better selection. At LargAroma, all orders above ₹500 ship across India, and we provide complete product descriptions including odour profiles and applications for every chemical.
