Diethyl Phthalate (DEP) is the workhorse solvent of the Indian agarbatti industry — but buying it wrong quietly destroys fragrance quality and profit. Manufacturers searching "DEP price per kg" often overlook the two things that actually matter: grade and adulteration. Here's a practical buyer's checklist from two decades of supplying the industry.

What DEP Actually Does in Agarbatti

DEP is the carrier that dilutes concentrated fragrance compound to dipping strength. It's odourless (when pure), evaporates slowly, carries fragrance deep into the batti, and controls your per-stick perfume cost. Typical dipping ratios run 1:2 to 1:4 (compound:DEP) depending on the market segment — premium sticks use richer ratios.

The 4 Signs of Adulterated or Low-Grade DEP

1. Smell test: pure DEP is nearly odourless. A sharp, solvent-like or oily smell signals contamination with cheaper solvents like kerosene fractions or industrial oils. 2. Colour: should be water-white and clear. Yellow tint indicates poor refining or recycled material. 3. Specific gravity: pure DEP measures 1.117-1.121 at 25°C — a simple hydrometer check catches most cut material, since diluents lower the reading. 4. Burn behaviour: adulterated DEP produces smoky burn, black soot deposits, or a harsh off-note when the stick burns — test before every bulk purchase, even from a repeat supplier.

Why Cheap DEP Costs More

Cut DEP means part of every kilogram is a diluent that carries no fragrance and often actively damages the burn. If your DEP is 15% adulterated, your effective fragrance cost rises — and customer complaints about weak or smoky sticks rise with it. Paying ₹10-15/kg more for verified pure material is almost always cheaper than the hidden cost of rework and lost repeat orders.

Storage and Handling

Keep DEP in sealed HDPE or MS drums away from sunlight; it absorbs odours from its environment surprisingly easily. Never store near kerosene, diesel or strongly-scented material. Rotate stock — old, oxidised DEP can develop a faint sourness that carries into finished sticks.
