The Four Faces of Oudh
Oudh isn't one note — it's a stack: a smoky-medicinal top, a woody-resinous heart, an animalic-leathery underlayer, and a sweet-balsamic base. Commercial oudh compounds recreate each with specific materials.
The Building Blocks
Smoky/medicinal: Guaiacol-type and birch-tar-type materials, used sparingly. Woody heart: Cedarwood, sandalwood chemicals, and amber-woody molecules like Cedramber and clean musks for diffusion. Animalic-leather: Iso Butyl Quinoline (IBQ) is the classic leather-tobacco note that gives oudh its dark, resinous edge — one of the most important oudh materials, and burn-stable. Sweet-balsamic base: Opoponax resinoid, Benzoin, and Coumarin.
Why IBQ Is the Oudh Secret
Ask any Indian perfumer what makes a synthetic oudh smell real, and IBQ comes up first. Even at 1–3% it transforms a flat woody blend into something dark, leathery, and expensive-smelling — and it survives combustion, making it ideal for agarbatti. Overdose it and it goes sharp; the working window rewards careful trials.
Cost Tiers
Budget oudh compound: ₹500–900/kg (woody-amber base, light IBQ). Premium oudh: ₹1,500–3,000/kg (layered smoky-animalic-balsamic with resinoids). Both are a fraction of natural oudh, which is why the entire commercial oudh agarbatti and bakhoor market runs on these materials.
